Clockwork Prince – Deleted Scene

Cassie just posted this on Twitter, saying she promised the Google Group something special when they hit 5,000 members. So here is a deleted scene from Clockwork Prince, with spoilers cut out.

The darkness came and went in waves that grew ever slower. Tessa was beginning to feel lighter, less like an awful weight was pressing her down. She wondered how much time had passed. It was night in the infirmary, and she could see Will a few beds away from her, a curled figure under the blankets, dark head pillowed on his arm. Brother Enoch had given him a tisane to drink once the [redacted] was cut out of his skin, and he had fallen asleep almost instantly, thank God. The sight of him in that much pain had been more harrowing than she could have imagined.

She was in a clean white nightgown now; someone must have cut away her blood-stiffened clothes and washed her hair before bandaging her — it lay softly over his shoulders, no longer twisted into rat-tails of tangles and drying blood.

‘Tessa,” came a whispered voice. “Tess?”

Only Will calls me that. She opened her eyes, but it was Jem seated on the side of her bed, looking down at her. The moonlight spilling through the high ceilings turned him almost transparent, an ethereal angel, all silver but for the gold chain at his throat.

He smiled. “You’re awake.”

“I’ve been awake here and there.” She coughed. “Enough to know I’m all right besides a crack on the head. A lot of fuss about nothing —” Tessa’s eyes dropped, and she saw that Jem was carrying something in his hands: a thick mug of some liquid that sent up a fragrant steam.

“What’s that?”

“One of Brother Enoch’s tisanes,” said Jem. “It will help you sleep.”

“All I’ve been doing is sleeping!”

“And very amusing it is to watch,” said Jem. “Did you know you twitch your nose when you sleep, like a rabbit?”

“I do not,” she said, with a whispered laugh.

“You do,” he said. “Fortunately, I like rabbits.” He handed her the cup. “Drink just a little,” He said. “It is right for you to sleep. Brother Enoch says to think of the wounds and shocks to your spirit as you would think of wounds and shocks to your body. You must rest the injured part of yourself before you begin to heal.”

Tessa was dubious, but she took a sip of the tisane anyway, and then another. It had a pleasant taste, like cinnamon. Barely had she swallowed the second mouthful when a feeling of exhaustion swept over her. Jem took the cup and she lay back against the pillows, listening to his soft voice telling her a story about a beautiful young woman whose husband had died building the Great Wall of China, and who had cried so much over his loss that she had turned into a silvery fish and swum away across a river. As Tessa drifted off into dreams, she felt his gentle hands take the cup from her and set it down on the bedside table. She wanted to thank him, but she was already asleep.

I’m on Team Jem, so I love it! What do you think?

I must admit; I am team Will… But this was cute ;D Why was it deleted in the first place; it’s great!
    Can’t wait to read the book… ;D

  2. Amy says:

I can’t decide which team I’m on, which is funny because I usually can. But I like how everyone in the novels seems to compare Tessa to animals. First ducks, then rabbits. :)

  3. Lili says:

After reading ‘Clockwork Angel’, I must say that I am all for the sweet and sensitive guy, so I am team Jem(look at us! we are all becoming like Twilight fans. Team this and this, or team such and such). But ****** is also in love with Jem, so that makes it more complicated. But if I were Jem, I would unfortunately choose ******, just because I would be able to see how much Will wants to love Tessa. Keyword wants. (BTW, has anybody noticed how much Will is like Jace? Minus looks, of course. Jace is big and blonde, while Will is tall dark and handsome)

  4. Lauren says:

I am team will, as much as jem is lovely! And this scene just shows how kind he is. But it has to be will for me. :D

  5. Katie says:

Jem is sweet but i love Will!!! Team Will 100%

  6. Lexie says:

Team Jem all the way! He is handsome and so sweet how could anyone not love him?! I mean will is okay but come on whats not to love about Jem?! If only he was real.

  7. Lexie says:

BTW Will is realated to Jace they have the same last name but still look nothing alike exept they are of corse both arogant and handsome.

  8. Lisa says:

    WILL! :D
Is it just me, or did the last paragraph remind you of when Jace was telling her the story in CoB, just before she went to sleep? Especially the last line..

  9. Rachel says:

Alas, I am “team Will” but Jem certainly has his sweet/romantic qualities :)

    It will be interesting to see what happens… I definitely think that Tessa comes back to TMI series not as an immortal but as a vision… {as found in CoG when talking to Magnus}

  10. ky says:

team jem defo hes so nice 2 tess but…. i think that tess might be confusued on who 2 choose jem or will?

  11. Aroni says:

well… i like will and jem both. and this is really a cute scene. don’t know why they needed to delete it. but it’s a little disturbing to hear jem calling tessa ‘tess’. i like it only when will calls her that.

  12. Kenna says:

Ugh I am so team Jem. They’d better find a cure for him! At the beginning of CA, I was on Will’s side. But… Jem grew on me. He’s amazing and sweet and romantic, and his mysterious air draws you in. I loved all the scenes with him. I do think that only Will should call Tessa ‘Tess’ tho. Jem should come up with his own nickname for her ;D I think (and really hope) that Tessa will end up with Jem. I mean, Jace is related to Will, right? So his line must have been carried on. So, since Tessa is a warlock, wouldn’t it not fit if Will married Tessa? Just my hopes… :)
